Full disclosure, I didn’t have much to go on but, as this is one of my favorite episodes, I couldn’t possibly pass up the opportunity to do a piece on this one. As a kid, I always watched this episode and, while it’s undeniably a classic, there is still one mystery lingering over this episode that I had never thought about until now. What exactly does the bubble boy have?

The entire episode centers around the titular bubble boy but it’s never actually revealed what his affliction is. It’s no doubt a question many avid Seinfeld fans have been wondering forever but, after all these years, I believe I have found the answer to this long-residing mystery. You see, I did some research and, near as I can tell, there is only one disease so severe that it requires one to live in a “bubble” (I use the quotes because we all know it’s technically more of a plastic divider).

So let me walk you through it. The illness goes by many names but most scientists just call it severe combined immunodeficiency (or SCID for short), a typically rare condition that affects an estimated 50,000 and 100,000 babies every year (mostly males), according to the NIH. It is often known as bubble boy disease because children with this ailment can’t fight off infections the same way a healthy kid can and, as such, are forced to live in a “bubble” to prevent exposure to germs.

I could go into further detail but you probably don’t read this series for a medical lesson. The point is this seems to perfectly line up with the bubble boy but it seems he may not have to live in that bubble for much longer. In recent years, scientists believe they have stumbled across a cure for this ailment. You see, the process is a gene therapy technique that works to reconstruct the immune system thereby negating the need for the bubble.

Of course, the long-term efficacy of this is still up in the air but, for now, scientists are seeing promising results with this new treatment. So this is definitely a great advancement in medical technology. He is also mentioned as being anemic but that wouldn’t require one to be in a bubble. In any case, it’s just good to finally have an answer to a question that’s been plaguing Seinfeld fans for decades. So that’s about all I have for you today but thank you guys so much for reading. Have a great week & I will see you back here next time for a brand new episode of SD. Until then, this is the x factor signing off.
