Seinfeld Declassified Episode 27: Does the alex really exist?
What’s up, guys? I know it’s been a while but we are finally back with a brand new episode. So let’s jump right in, shall we? Season 7, episode 10 sees the second (& final appearance) of george’s favorite arch-nemesis, lloyd braun. After Peter Keleghan moved to canada, they opted to recast him with matt mccoy. I don’t know why they couldn’t have just flown him down for shooting but I guess it was just cheaper this way.
Anyway, the crux of the episode follows the k man as he helps renovate & reopen the alex, an old movie theater but is this a real place? Well as it turns out, it is. In fact, the whole plot of the episode stems from one of the assistant directors, Randy Carter, who actually did have a hand in reopening the iconic theater & promoted it to the cast & crew (although in real life, it’s nowhere near NYC, instead being based out of Glendale, CA).
Interestingly enough, it seems the episode may have had a bigger impact than we realized. Just a year after its airing, the Alex was added to the national register of historic places, thereby ensuring it can never be demolished. The car story was also true as it takes inspiration from the experience of one of the writers, Tom Gammill. As for the gum story, however, there is no evidence to support its basis in any real-life events so I think it’s safe to say that was made up.
But as for the Alex, it is still in operation to this day. So if you’re ever in the area, it’s definitely worth checking out. That’s about all I have for you guys today but thanks for reading. Have a great weekend & I’ll see you back here soon for a brand new episode of SD.
