Culinary Culture Episode 8: Going old school
Whenever there’s a new mcflurry on the horizon, you can bet your favorite food critic will be there to deliver his thoughtful & honest review. So I went in & ordered one. It was ready quite promptly (I don’t think it was more than six minutes or so) & I took it back to my seat to give it a whirl. I put the spoon in my mouth & it was…fine.
I mean we’re not reinventing the wheel here or anything but if you do have a sweet tooth, you’ll probably enjoy it. It’s basically just vanilla ice cream with some caramel syrup & chopped candies thrown in for good measure. I happen to like caramel so I was on board with it but your mileage may vary in that regard. I guess it’s supposed to emulate the werther’s originals your grandma typically had on hand but to me it just felt like caramel ice cream with a handful of crunchy toppings. I mean you could easily make this at home. & for $4.50 a pop, it’s probably cheaper to do it that anyway.
I still say we’re getting screwed in the ice cream department (& not in a fun way). I mean the uk has a smarty mcflurry, italy has a pistachio flavored one & mexico has a strawberry/oreo combo that is sure to delight the senses. Meanwhile, we’re stuck with the candy that’s been at the bottom of our grandma’s purse for the last twenty years or so. I don’t know why they ever discontinued the reese’s mcflurry but that sounded awesome. I would’ve loved to try that. But I digress
So, anyway if you like caramel & candy, I think you’ll probably have a good time with it but there’s nothing particularly special about it. In all honesty, it does feel like they’ve gotten a bit lazy with these new flavors they’re pumping out. Just keep in mind, though, caramel can get quite sticky so you might want to get some napkins before you dig in. I don’t know how long it’s scheduled to be on the menu but their website does say it’s a limited time item so if you want to try it for yourself, I advise you to head to your nearest mdonald’s asap & form your own opinion.
