Culinary Culture Episode 5: Just the meds the doctor ordered
Today’s episode brings us to the middle east as we check out mediterranean deli (or med deli for short). Starting out in chapel hill back in 91, they have since thrived in chapel hill and even opened a new location in Elon just 45 miles away a few years back. So what better way to celebrate their anniversary than with a trip to their restaurant?
I had been to their chapel hill location numerous times and never once walked away disappointed but I wanted to see if their Elon location lived up to the hype as well. I showed up around late afternoon which turned out to be the smart move. If I had gone during the lunch rush, it most likely would have taken forever to get any food but because I went during the off session, there was virtually no wait to order.
Of course, it did take a bit longer for the food to actually get to me but, after trying, it was clear it was worth every second I stood next to the counter waiting for them to hand me my order. I got the Turkish Doner (basically a lamb shawarma) with a fruit kabob and fig leaves. Now the fruit was pretty much what you’d expect; I’d never judge a restaurant based solely on that considering they have basically nothing to do with the quality of its taste but the rest was just perfect.
The doner turned out to be every meat lover’s dream come true with the perfect arrangement of spices and sauces to leave you wanting more (yet still satisfied) and the fig leaves could not have come out better if they tried. It’s clear that whether they’re in elon or chapel hill, this is definitely not a restaurant that skimps on quality. It may be a bit pricey but it’s definitely worth every single penny.
